good/suck list: week in review
a great majority of these things happened this week (is it really only Thursday?) but a few didn't. meh.
GOOD
- snow day on Monday!
- getting my car successfully inspected--the last one expired in March 2005. way to stay on top of things, parents. but good job, little automobile! i'm so proud!
- still being friends with Shahrzad.
- how Violet Temper calls me (well, everyone) "sweetheart". it's adorable.
- deciding on a derby name. just call me...Minority Whip.
- starting a "nursebob.rtf" file of quotable quotes. like
[mr. p is looking at the mlk day schedule]
mr. p: bob, are you doing the health screenings?
bob: no, i'm going to get high in the parking lot - site visit from Bill today, where i tried to persuade him to switch to Mac and he told me wild stories about his deathly fear of mice
- being missed and asked about by all the kids at school, making me feel needed and noticed and appreciated. Shahrzad is right, my job certainly does give me a sense of belonging and purpose. how many of you can say that? (not many, i bet) but then again, how many of you are making more than $10,000 this year? (yeah, everyone except for me) i'm going to bake cookies for them tonight, since i bought all the ingredients to make them for George recently, but then item 3 on the Suck list happened.
- getting hit on via email by PBT Daron. funny and cute. now i know who to call if i "want to hang out with an old guy that isn't very thin".
- staying at work until 6 pm, which might not sound very late for you 9 to 5 folks but keep in mind that school lets out at 3. why? well, A) i talked to Saroj on IM, which was an LOL-ingly good time, talking about making out with girls AKA sticking it to the patriarchy, making fun of mtoups, and the ever-popular subject of Charlie Smart. and B) walking to the trolley stop, i see TWO separate white-people scooter gangs and hear the corner church tolling out a four-minute bell song and see lit kitchen windows filled with the sound of bustling families. it's neat and strangely comforting how the same street i walk down every morning at 8:30 am can be so much more vibrant and humming with domestic activity at 6.
- having this upcoming Monday off. i'm going to ride the whole Schuylkill Trail for the first time, with Faith Hawkwoman for company
- potentially starting cognitive behavior therapy, if it doesn't cost a million dollars
- discovering the HipsterPDA which, despite its stupid name, is actually a brilliant concept and i'm gonna do it, once i procure some unlined 3x5s. if nothing else, it'll coordinate my multi-store, multi-priority grocery shopping lists.
- and finally, not breaking out like mad despite having been off hormonal birth control for over two weeks now
SUCK
- showing up for work anyway on said snow day. i dug my car out and drove to Camden on Sunday and people couldn't take their kids to school a whole day later? weak.
- losing my debit and credit cards out of my wallet this week. GOOD THING i disregarded the stern reprimands of Mr. US Border Customs Official Man and did not start carrying my newly-acquired green card with me last week.
- getting dumped on Valentine's Day.
so yeah, i think i still came out ahead in the end. i may not have realized it late last night when i was panicking in "oh god, I have no friends and no one to turn to. I am broken and incapable of maintaining friendships like a normal human being" mode as Shahrzad describes it, but there's nothing like bulleted lists to bring me back to my senses.

Well, last night in Iraq and nothing to do until Showtime. Tough break, I'd tell you about my day but hey, song is always better.
Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my god, you can’t believe it’s happening
Again
Your baby’s gone, and you’re all alone
And it looks like the end.
And you’re back out on the street.
And you’re tryin’ to remember.
How will you start it over?
You don’t know what became.
You don’t care much for a stranger’s touch,
But you can’t hold your man.
You never thought you’d be alone this far
Down the line
And I know what’s been on your mind
You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time
The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell
You didn’t love the boy too much, no, no
You just loved the boy to well, farewell
So you live from day to day, and you dream
About tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to
Make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin’ what
I left behind and from worrying ’bout this wasted time
Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:
’sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone.’
So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can
Get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn’t really
Wasted time

The Hipster PDA rocks. I did something like it for a while. It's way better than an actual PDA.
