Hey, Katie, apropos of nothing, I have a stupid bike question for you: Is there a big difference in the amount of effort to ride around in a city on a road bike versus a mountain bike? I'm not talking racing or anything, just going a mile or two to work. Thanks!

Doug: Your commute is only a mile? Lucky! For that short of a distance, it's no big deal to ride a mountain bike, if that's what you already have. If you don't care about going really fast and zipping in and out of traffic, then it'll get the job done just as well. Once you get used to riding on the streets though, you might find yourself wanting to go further and further distances, maybe to pick up some groceries or run errands, etc. Or for the sheer fun of it. There's something uniquely thrilling about urban biking that I love with a passion, especially now that I've been riding my fixie around Philadelphia.
