you know it's summer
when you get your first mosquito bite. when you see the first gigantic bumblebee (where do they breed those things anyway?). and when you leave for class 15 min early but still get there 30 min late.
speaking of animals. there was a whole family of those tiny brown birds harassing us while we ate lunch outside today. the kids knew no fear and kept hopping closer and closer to Matt's leg and then he (Matt, not the bird) got scared and ran away. except without the running away part. we also watched a squirrel walk across the sidewalk and skulk under a car. yes, he was walking. it was weird. when he was crawling around under the car, it looked like he was getting ready to ambush a passing pedestrian. then we decided it was TOO weird and that we didn't want to do work anyway so we followed the Sneaky Squirrel towards the tennis courts, on the posner side. when we got close, rather than running, he leaped away in little jumps. pretty quickly too. when he crawled under the rail he looked just like a military guy going under barbed wire. he kept clinging to the rail right above the 15 ft drop down onto the court and we managed to pressure him all the way to the wall where, just as it looked like he was cornered, he walked onto the top of the chain link fence and shimmied face first down the fence to the grass. there he proceeded to bathe his back right foot in squirrel spit. i think there was something wrong with it and that's why he was walking.
