i am not as down as i sound.

these non-social things still make me happy.

• still determinedly reading Godel, Escher, Bach. the most recent chapter i've read really beautifully illustrates the fundamental similarities between the whole process of genetics (DNA, RNA, mRNA, tRNA, ribosomes, amino acids, etc) and formal systems of mathematics. the many levels of encoding, self-referential loops, and (what's the word for when the same thing can be interpreted to have different meanings...) are amazing and the formal rigor with which Hofstadter presents it is astounding. for example, you know how there are twenty amino acids which can be coded for, and their corresponding table that shows what bases code for which? Hofstadter sets up his mathematical formal system to have exactly twenty symbols (symbols like "for all", "there exists", equality, and such) and draws up an equivalent table. the elegance of their equivalence is like when i first learned about how the periodic table was "discovered." the underlying order has always been there (in the universe?), it's just a matter of recognizing it. that whole concept has always been very intuitively appealing to me.


• the wrct record library. just spent the last few hours listening to music. things that i should have copied a long time ago (the faint and q and not u) and things new (pj harvey).


• latest favorite outfit: goldenrod Steel Valley Soccer tshirt, aqua belt, brown pants, with the pink chucks.
